The Endoscopy Procedure

This procedure is used by an Upper GI surgeon to both diagnose and treat upper GI tract problems. Upon arrival at the clinic in Milton Keynes, you will initially be assessed by our qualified and experienced team to ascertain the reasons for the procedure and to provide an understanding of what an endoscopy involves.

This will involve looking at your previous medical history, including any medications you are currently prescribed (including any over-the-counter medicines or blood thinning medications).

An endoscopy helps investigate issues including:

  • Symptoms of indigestion, heartburn, a bitter taste in the back of the mouth and/or acid reflux
  • Unexplained weight loss or Coeliac disease
  • Difficulty swallowing, nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal (tummy) cramps, bloating and pains, particularly in the upper abdomen
  • Severe pain in the upper abdomen
  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori (a stomach bug that can cause indigestion type pains)
  • Stomach or oesophageal cancer
  • Anaemia or bleeding from the bowel (usually black tarry and foul-smelling stools)
  • Early satiety – feeling ‘full’ after only a small meal

Preparation & What to Expect

Before attending the Milton Keynes clinic for an endoscopy, you should refrain from eating for at least six hours before the test is due to commence – this allows for better views of the stomach. If required, you may have sips of water no later than two hours before the procedure.

An endoscopy can be performed with or without sedation. Please note that if you intend to undergo the procedure with sedation you must ensure you make arrangements to get home, as you will be unable to operate a vehicle.

Once inside the endoscopy room, our team will do everything to make the procedure as comfortable as can be. An anaesthetic spray will be provided to minimise the gag reflex as the camera is inserted, and you will be required to lie on your left side. You will be connected to a machine which monitors blood pressure, oxygen and pulse rates, and a protective mouthpiece will be used in order to keep your mouth open.
